Style: American Porter with Chai Tea added
From: North Hampton, NH
*Formally the White Heron Chai Porter
Brewer’s Note: “Chai Tea Porter is a very smooth porter with a rich aroma and a warming, palate-pleasing spiciness that comes from Cahi Tea made by NH’s White Heron Tea. This velvety beer pairs well with desserts like cheesecake and crème brulee, creamy cheeses like brie, or, by itself with friends.”
The beer pours a dark, coffee black with a huge head of rocky, khaki bubbles that slowly fizzle away, leaving a lacing of sticky stripes on the sides of the glass. In body, the beer is too dark for the eyes to penetrate. On the nose, the beer smells beautifully spicy with chai and cinnamon notes alongside very light grass and roast malt and a touch of smooth milk chocolate. On the tongue, the beer tastes fruity sweet with a light, bitter roast and a touch of cider-like acidity. The beer finishes sweet and milky with a touch of roast. In the mouth, the beer feels on the very light side of medium with a smooth and creamy mouthfeel, but a slight watery touch at the end. The flavors began as spicy, fruity chai with a touch of roast. The flavors transition into spicy, milk chocolate with soft coffee notes. Light plastic flavors also tint the edges of the chai-notes, but they are very slight. A very soft cidery flavor can be sensed, right on the finish of the beer with a touch of bitter coffee, toffee, creamy milk, smooth chocolate, and a smidge of cinnamon. Overall, the beer is a lighter porter, and gives a light watery sense to it as you sip, but it is tasty and sessionable with some nice chai and porter flavors. It is a great representation of what its label says it is, I just wish this beer was a little thicker… The beer was really nice to sip, though, and is an excellent beer to session over a cool fall or winter’s night.
