Style: Brett Brux American Farmhouse Ale

Brewer’s Note: “Little Lobster on the Prairie is a Farmhouse Saison that is lightly hopped with Galaxy hops and fermented with Brettanomyces Bruxellensis. This yeast brings notes of funky, musty, overripe fruits as well as light barnyard notes staying true to the farmhouse style. Refermented in the bottle with Blue Lobsters house yeast, this beer should be decanted and opened carefully as this beer is still developing in the bottle.”
This beer, while a collaboration, is Blue Lobster’s first bottled beer. The fact that it is a collaboration with the awesome folks down at Prairie Artisan Ales only ups the ante on this beer, and made it a must grab for me. I am, admittedly, a Blue Lobster fan boy and have yet to have bad beer from them. I pulled into Blue Lobster late and was worried I wouldn’t get a bottle, but lo and behold I got two! Woo!
The beer’s label is funky and cute in a good way. I don’t always go for the cartoony-style beer labels, but this one has no humans, nor anthropomorphic animals, which is nice. The splash of red in the field of green gives a nice highlight to the label. I do wish the label had been a little larger/placed higher up on the bottle, but seeing as how these guys rolled on all the labels by hand, I really can’t complain. The beer’s title font is funky, and there is practically no clutter on this label, which is just awesome. I love the coloring, and I love the way the waves look. I like this label, and even if it wasn’t the first bottle release by Blue Lobster, I would still say this label is worthy of the shelf for sure. Its nice little work of art.
The beer pours a proper golden-yellow with orange highlights, a bit lit like a very dehydrated man’s piss. The beer pours with a nice fluffy head of medium sized, round bubbles of an eggshell white color. The head fizzles down to about a fourth of a finger’s width and gives the beer a nice crown. In body, the beer is crystal clean and vibrant, but quite opaque with a deep haze muddling the light within the beer. On the nose, this beer is beautifully expressive of the brux with thick and candied funk wafting up to my nose. The scent is crisp and clean, yet wonderfully funky with huge pineapple citrus and orange peel notes coming off alongside gentle cherry fruit leather, and even a perfect touch of bristly horse blanket. The beer’s nose is bright and beautiful. On the tongue, the beer tastes sharply tart at first, but this is smoothed into a beautiful balance of sweet and acidic funk and a perfectly light bittering from the hops, which gives an added level of complexity to the beer. The beer feels of a medium body on the tongue, with a carbonation that comes across a bit too sharply on the palate when mixed with the acidity, but which draws the flavors of the beer wonderfully onto the tongue. In flavor, this beer is gentler than the nose, making the beer quite nice to sip. It begins as funky, tart hay and horse blanket flavors, slowly bursting with spicy pepper and ripe citrus fruits that move from pineapple to slight grapefruit and orange on the finish. The middle of the sip brings the Galaxy hops to the forefront of the tongue and gives wonderful prickly pine and big grassy bitters that dance alongside the sweet and acidic funk. The funk builds into a beautiful, long, and fruity finish of cherry fruit leather, orange, pineapple and a beautiful kiss of bready malts. As the beer leaves, the mouth is left feeling a bit tingly from the carbonation and fierceness of the beer, but also nicely dry with not a lot of saliva drowning the mouth. Lingering flavors of orange juice and candied pineapple dance on the tongue. Personally, I’d place this beer more on the “Wild Ale” side of things, but that’s just because it is so ripe with awesome brux flavors, and is softer in the saison aspects, but all in all this is a great beer and it is complex and exciting in flavor. My one complaint is the sharp mouthfeel, but that doesn’t really take away from how delightful this beer is to sip. A brilliant collaboration and a great preview of what is to come from Blue Lobster’s bottling projects. This is a beer to try.
